Pathology model uses 50× less compute while retaining 97% average performance

The week's strongest signal is not more parameters, but systems, validation, and bioengineering moving closer to real workflows.

GigaPath-Flash distils a one-billion-parameter teacher into a 22M-parameter tile encoder plus a 21M-parameter slide encoder. The paper reports 97% of average slide-level performance with roughly 50-fold less compute. GigaTIME-Flash reports sixfold faster execution, eightfold lower GPU memory use, and Apache 2.0 open weights.

The boundary matters: 97% is an average over reported benchmarks, not clinical equivalence. The work remains an arXiv preprint and does not replace independent validation across hospitals and cancer types.

Across the ten primary studies, three trends stand out: deployment cost is becoming a first-class objective; clinical AI is being tested by task and across centres; and spatial omics plus bioprinting are moving evidence toward mechanism and tissue scale.
